The Urban of League of Greater Columbus, Inc.
(ULGC) is a multicultural, professional community service agency
committed to assuring equal opportunities for all citizens of the greater
Columbus area through advocacy, bridge-building, program services and research.
The League was organized in
1971 in Columbus, Georgia as a 501c(3) agency whose board and staff are
representative of the total community. It receives funding from the United Way,
private foundations, businesses, memberships, and from federal, state and local
governments. The League belongs to the Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business
Bureau and is an affiliate of the National Urban League, Inc.
As a community service agency, the League
promotes harmony and understanding among all citizens and provides the
disadvantaged and the community at large with a wide variety of program
services. Programs are offered in Economic Development and Employment,
Education, Health, Housing and Consumer Education, Community Awareness and CASA
(Court Appointed Special Advocates).
In keeping with its motto, "Our Children = Our Destiny",
these services are designed to maintain, strengthen, and/or rebuild the family
unit as an essential institution upon which America's future rests.
Mission
The mission of the Urban League movement is to help African Americans and all
Americans attain social and economic equality.
The
fundamental objective is to enable those who are striving toward the
mainstream to achieve economic self-reliance and to enjoy their rights as equal
citizens under the law. The Urban League carries out this mission at this
mission at local, state, national levels by:

that help individual and communities help themselves.

compatible organizations and building bridges between all segments of
society.

policy analysis.

Engaging in principled
advocacy, community mobilization, social marketing, and communications
on behalf of those we serve.
