Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA)....
Every child should have a
safe, loving and permanent home, but many do not. Each year in Georgia,
thousands of children become entangled in the juvenile justice and
foster care programs because they are victims of abuse or neglect. A
large majority of the children are taken from their homes and places in
an already overburdened system where they can get "lost" for
months and even years.
Education
The National Urban League is dedicated to ensuring that our children are well-educated and equipped for economic self reliance in the 21st century. To carry out this mission, the League's affiliates enact programs that serve children from kindergarten through high school, and on through college. The League also helps college students through its scholarship program. The Education Department provides supportive
and supplemental services to educational institutions through parent and
student activities. Through its many collaborations, the Education
Department promotes and enforces positive aspects of youth development.
Economic Development and
Employment
|
The development on minority-owned businesses is encouraged through
coalition building, and in cooperation with business/finance-related
institutions and organizations in the tri-community. The League
offers employment searches and counseling including intake,
assessment, resume preparation, and referral assistance for the
unemployment and underemployed in finding meaningful work. The
Invest in Youth program provides work as well as an alternative to
the streets for youth during the summer months.
On-the-Job Training is provided for adults twenty-two (22) years of
age and older. Customers must meet eligibility guidelines as
required through the referral system of the local one-stop center
and have been referred to this provider by WIA intake personnel. For
additional information, call our Employment Specialist. |
Housing Counseling
Comprehensive housing counseling
is provided to families and individuals with emphasis on purchase and
retention of primary residence. Regular seminars cover a wide range of
home buying information and qualify attendees for certificates needed
for special mortgage programs designed to assist first time homebuyers.
Special intervention counseling is provided to those who are in danger
of losing their homes.
Invest In Youth
During the summer months, United
Way agencies experience a dramatic increase in the number of clients
served – particularly agencies serving children and youth. College
students and high school seniors who do not qualify for the city’s
regular summer employment programs (because of income requirements) are
placed in jobs by the League in United Way agencies. Their salaries are
paid through grants. (The League placed 36 students this summer of which
21 were placed at United Way agencies).
Urban League on
Location.
A weekly
television show highlighting the current events and community activities
in the Columbus community is produced as an opportunity for businesses
to promote and showcase their services to the area. Urban League on
Location can be viewed at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning on the local NBC
affiliate, Channel 38.
UL GUILD
A volunteer group that provides
program and financial support to the agency. Its function is to
strengthen the organization by interpreting its programs and engaging in
cultural civic, and social activities. The Guild sponsors the Ebony
Fashion Show and provides an annual scholarship for qualified high
school seniors.
UL Young
Professionals
Urban League Young Professionals (ULYP) is an auxiliary organization dedicated to bringing the next generation of leaders into the Urban League movement. The organization serves as an umbrella over dozens of Urban League Young Professional chapters in cities across the country. Through these chapters, thousands of members, ages 21 to 40, work to advance the Urban League agenda through corporate, social and community activism.
Our members believe in economic and social parity, and are working hard to develop proactive and innovative resolutions to the challenges our society faces.
